diamonds in the rough...

These are today's collection of gems. Since this is my first time doing this, next time I make an offering I will be sure to have information on where you can re-visit the picture in its original context. For this round, you will have to use your imagination.

the room got heavy, but only for a minute...

I came across a new fashion publication today that I thought was worth mentioning. Based out of Hungary, The Room has just celebrated its 10th issue. Dedicated to men's and women's fashion and contemporary art, it provides a beautiful and insightful spin on the much familiar subject matter. The fonts are divine and they use emerging models and photographers for their fashion editorials. In the states, The Room, is only available in the flesh at St. Marks Books in New York.

For their blog, which has beautiful images, http://theroommag.blogspot.com/.

don't point that thing at me...

topman / jethro cave

Jethro Cave is one my favorites. He has recently been shot for the upcoming Topman Spring/Summer '10 catalogue. Love him or hate him, I don't think hes going anywhere anytime soon. You can see all the images from the infamous collaboration between Hedi, Jethro and Nicola Formichetti here, http://nicolaformichetti.blogspot.com/2009/01/jethro-cave.html.

C'mon Billy

Its Only Rock n' Roll but I Like It...
leather jackets + rolled up drain pipes and creepers = rockabilly?

This is not the rockabilly I remember, amen. The striped socks, studded oxfords, tucked in shirts and rolled up sleeves seem to have some elements from last fall but the kinks have been worked out and it makes a clean statement. I think its also a bit androgynous which is always sexy. This editorial is a bit luxe but what I took away from it was a reinforcement of what we all know...

a. the details count. don't go through the time and energy to get dressed only to blow it at the last minute. if it seems like too much or too little, it probably is. If your metal is on your feet keep it simple around the neck and fingers.
b. you can mix tweeds and plaids as long as you stay within the same color pallet.
c. no brown accessories with black or grey. sorry.

post script. If you can't spring for the prada studded shoes this might make for a good rainy day craft corner project.

the lightness of being...

Imbuing his poetic, sun-drenched images with the love and harmony that defines his way of life, mark borthwick has become one of the most influential photographers of his generation by following his own vision. Challenging the conventions of fashion photography with experimental images that convey an idiosyncratic humour and optimism, borthwick has shot for purple, self service, i-D, interview and another magazine over the last 15 years, as well as shooting campaigns for comme des garcons, martin margiela, and yohji yamamoto. Recently, borthwick has moved on to experimenting with installation, film and sound culminationg in an exhibition at brooklyn's own Journal gallery.

I find his work to not be new or groundbreaking, but nostalgic and romantic. He is dedicated to the idea and process of sharing and has no interest in digital photography. My heart lies with more classic methods of photography and believe mark has found a stimulating way to blend a consciousness of composition with a snap-shot aesthetic. He has a few books out that are a testament to sequence and collection, an exhibition method that hovers (at sometimes a bit too closely) to tillmans and the ability to create fuzzy saturated hues and leaks of color through a somewhat abandoned dedication to slide film.
